== January 28, 1982 (Thursday) == In Padua, 10 agents of Italy's NOCS anti-terrorism force rescued U.S. Army Brigadier General James L. Dozier, who had been kidnapped by the Red Brigades terrorist group on December 17. Kemal Arikan, the consul general of the Turkey's consulate in the U.S. city of Los Angeles, was shot to death while stopped at a traffic light while driving home. Arikan, struck 14 times by bullets, died at the scene. Sassounian would be found guilty of murder in 1984, and initially sentenced to life imprisonment without possibility of parole, but would be freed in 2021 after more than 38 years incarceration. === Scientific era === In 1500 polymath Leonardo da Vinci provided the first illustration of the thyroid. In 1543 anatomist Andreas Vesalius gave the first anatomic description and illustration of the gland. In 1656 the thyroid received its modern name, by the anatomist Thomas Wharton. The gland was named thyroid, meaning shield, as its shape resembled the shields commonly used in Ancient Greece. The English name thyroid gland is derived from the medical Latin used by Wharton – glandula thyreoidea. Glandula means 'gland' in Latin, and thyreoidea can be traced back to the Ancient Greek word θυρεοειδής, meaning 'shield-like/shield-shaped'. French chemist Bernard Courtois discovered iodine in 1811, and in 1896 Eugen Baumann documented it as the central ingredient in the thyroid gland. Cytosine deamination can alter the genome's many regulatory functions; previously silenced transposable elements (TEs) may become transcriptionally active due to the loss of CPG sites. TEs have been proposed to accelerate the mechanism of enhancer creation by providing extra DNA that is compatible with the host transcription factors that eventually have an impact on C-to-T mutations.
As mayor, Bukele began a "reordering" ("reordenamiento") to revitalize the city's historic downtown area and combat crime. ==== Cyberbullying ==== Cyberbullying in Malawi highlights the need for increased awareness and action. In 2019, a disturbing incident occurred when a secondary school student, Mercy Phiri, was cyberbullied on social media by her classmates. The bullies created a fake account in Mercy's name and shared embarrassing posts and images, causing her significant emotional distress. The incident prompted the school to take action, and the bullies were disciplined. In 2018 and 2024, a popular musician, Tay Grin, was cyberbullied on social media by a rival musician, who spread false rumors and insults about him.
